Case Study
Brief
The theme was 'Christmas Wish List' and each window would showcase one item that would most likely be on someone's wish list for Christmas. This item would be oversized and be the main focus within a large snow drift that would house a scene in miniature.
Create a large, stable, lightweight and also strong snowdrift that would allow the VM team at Selfridges to add one large prop which would sit securely onto the drift and also attach and pin lots of miniature props to the surface.
22 windows - 10pm until 7am, 3 days
What we did
-
We decided on covering the whole surface with Ice Wax White and Ice Sparkle.
This would provide the look of fresh snow and would again provide a surface for items and props to be attached.
The wax will allow us to hide the section lines by running a heat gun over the surface once the sections have been put together again.

We found a polycarver who was happy to take up the challenge of producing 22 large polystyrene snow drifts.
The designs and measurements for each snow drift were sent to the polycarver.
Small scale models of each drift were produced to see if the measurements and contours worked for each piece.
Measurements of the access doors given to the polycarver to ensure that each drift would be cut in to sections that would fit through the doors.
We hired an additional warehouse to dress, wrap and prepare each drift for the installation.
Batches of drifts would arrive on scheduled dates and a plan was put into place to ensure that we wouldn't be late for day one of the installation.
Once all drifts were waxed and sparkled each section was wrapped in bubble wrapped, named and numbered.
